The Journey of Pi – The Yamanote Memory Palace
円周率、パイ。
Pi — the circle’s secret name.
三・一四から始まるこの数字は、
一見、意味のない数の列のように見えます。
It begins with 3.14,
a string of numbers that may seem meaningless at first glance.
けれど実は、この円周率の記憶こそ、
世界記憶選手権でも主要な種目のひとつです。
Yet memorizing Pi itself
is one of the main events in the World Memory Championships.
記憶術の基本がすべて詰まった、
知の花形競技とも言えるものです。
It is a showcase discipline,
containing the very essence of the art of memory.
数字の羅列の中には、
メモニクス――つまり語呂合わせや、
記憶宮殿の力が隠れています。
Within these digits lie the powers of mnemonics—
wordplay and the technique of the memory palace.
一般には難しそうに思える円周率の記憶。
でも、正しい方法で丁寧に取り組めば、
誰にでもできる記憶です。
Memorizing Pi seems difficult to most people,
but with the right approach and patience,
it’s something anyone can master.
その具体的な方法を、
今回は「山手線の旅」として紹介します。
Let me introduce this method
as a journey around Tokyo’s Yamanote Line.
まず第一のステップ。
自分の顔の中に「記憶宮殿」をつくります。
Step one:
Build your memory palace inside your own face.
目、鼻、口、耳――
それぞれを部屋に見立て、
山手線の10の駅を順番に配置していきます。
Your eyes, nose, mouth, and ears become chambers—
and within them, place ten Yamanote Line stations in order.
次に第二のステップ。
その10の駅の中に、10個の物語を作ります。
Step two:
Inside each of the ten stations, create a small story.
数字の組み合わせを、
風景や音、感情のイメージに変えていきます。
Turn the digits into images—
landscapes, sounds, or emotions you can visualize.
これが、「顔の中の山手線記憶宮殿」です。
This is the Yamanote Line Memory Palace within your own face.
数字が物語となり、物語が記憶となり、
そして記憶は体験へと変わっていきます。
